Terms of Use

About these terms
These terms apply whenever you use the Reeef app. By ticking the box and tapping “Agree and continue” you accept them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use Reeef. If you are under 18, only use Reeef with a parent’s or guardian’s permission.
Reeef is provided by Andrew Bucknell.
What Reeef is, and what it is not
Reeef is a free reference tool for planning time on the water. It shows a simplified summary of some marine park zoning rules for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and adjoining Queensland marine park waters, and modelled weather and sea conditions.
- Reeef is not legal advice, and not an official government source.
- Reeef is not a navigation aid, chart or tide table.
- Reeef is not a safety, rescue or emergency service.
- Reeef is not connected with or endorsed by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, Fisheries Queensland, Maritime Safety Queensland or the Bureau of Meteorology.
It does not replace official zoning maps, legislation, signs, notices or permits.
How to read a result
- Results come from a fixed copy of government zoning boundaries and a draft summary of the rules that we prepared. The summary has not been independently reviewed. The versions are shown in Layers, App diagnostics.
- “Allowed under mapped rules” only means the rules in Reeef’s summary found no restriction on the activity you chose at the crosshair. It does not mean the activity is permitted there under every law.
- “Conditional”, “Permit required” and “Prohibited” summarise a mapped rule. Read the details and check the official source.
- Near a zone boundary Reeef shows the stricter side. Boundaries on screen are simplified, and phone positions can be wrong by tens of metres or more.
- “Check official map” means Reeef can’t give a result there. Never treat it as permission.
- Rules change at any time. Reeef checks for updated Queensland rules when it has a connection, but its copy can still be out of date.
What Reeef does not cover
Unless the app clearly says otherwise, Reeef does not cover:
- Most Queensland fisheries closures. Reeef shows the spearfishing closures it has drawn from the legislation, and their edges are approximate.
- Size, bag and possession limits, protected and no-take species, and gear rules. Reeef lists some closed seasons, not every one.
- Temporary and emergency closures.
- Permits, licences and fees.
- Anchoring, mooring, speed, vessel and port rules, and rules on land and islands.
Check Fisheries Queensland, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s zoning maps and local signs before you go.
Weather, sea and tide
Wind, rain, swell and tide in Reeef are computer-model estimates from Open-Meteo for an area, not measurements or official forecasts. The tide figure is a modelled sea level, not an official tide prediction, and is not suitable for navigation. Reeef links to the Bureau of Meteorology for marine warnings and does not show them itself. Check the Bureau of Meteorology and official tide tables, and judge conditions for yourself.
Your responsibilities
You are responsible for checking official sources, following the law, holding any permits you need, and the safety of yourself and anyone with you. Don’t let Reeef distract you while operating a vessel. Don’t use Reeef to break the law or harm the reef or its wildlife, and don’t copy, scrape or resell the app or its data except as the law allows.
Your licence to use Reeef
You may use Reeef on Apple devices you own or control, for your own personal use, under these terms and Apple’s Usage Rules. This licence is non-exclusive and you can’t transfer it. All other rights are kept by Andrew Bucknell and our licensors.
Data from others
Reeef relies on services and data from others, which may change, be interrupted or stop. Their own terms also apply.

Your consumer rights
If the Australian Consumer Law applies to you, you may have guarantees and rights that cannot be excluded, restricted or changed. Nothing in these terms does that.
Limits on our liability
Subject to your consumer rights, and to the extent permitted by law:
- Reeef is provided free and “as is”. We don’t promise that it is accurate, complete, current, available or free of errors.
- Andrew Bucknell is not liable for loss or damage from using or relying on Reeef, including fines or penalties, seized gear or catch, trip costs, damage to property, and indirect or consequential loss.
Changes to Reeef and these terms
We may change, suspend or stop Reeef or any data source at any time. We may update these terms, for example when the data, the sources or the law change; the date at the top shows the current version. If a change is significant, Reeef will show you the new terms and ask you to accept them to keep using the app. If you don’t agree, stop using Reeef and delete it.
Ending
You can stop at any time by deleting Reeef. Deleting the app removes everything it stored on your phone. We may stop providing Reeef to you if you seriously breach these terms.
Apple
These terms are between you and Andrew Bucknell, not Apple. We, not Apple, are responsible for Reeef and its content, its maintenance and support, and any claim about it, including product liability, claims that it fails to meet a law or regulation, consumer protection and intellectual property claims. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no warranty obligation for Reeef. You confirm that you are not in a country subject to a US Government embargo or designated as “terrorist supporting”, and that you are not on a US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Queensland, Australia. You and we submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Queensland. If you live elsewhere, mandatory consumer laws where you live may also apply.
General
If part of these terms can’t be enforced, the rest still applies. These terms, our Privacy Policy and Apple’s terms are the whole agreement about Reeef.
